Free Vitamin D for people at higher risk from coronavirus

Posted on January 28th, 2021

Some people who are at higher risk from coronavirus (COVID-19) can apply to receive a free supply of vitamin D supplements this winter.

All those who are clinically extremely vulnerable (on the government’s shielded patients list) will receive a letter inviting them to opt in for a free supply of vitamin D which will be delivered directly to their homes.

Deliveries will be free of charge, starting in January, and will provide 4 months’ worth of daily supplements to last people through the winter months.

Dr Fiona Ogden-Forde, a GP in Liverpool and Governing Body Member for NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) explains:

“Vitamin D is important for our general health, particularly bone and muscle health.

“Getting enough vitamin D is especially important this year, as people are more likely to have been indoors for extended periods due to measures introduced to stop the spread of COVID-19 – especially those who have been shielding.”

You do not need an NHS prescription to receive your free supply of Vitamin D this winter, and you should only contact your GP if you have any specific health concerns about taking vitamin D that you wish to discuss before applying.

The letter details how you can access this free supply, or alternatively you can apply online here. You will need to have your NHS number to hand (you can find this on any letter or document you have received from the NHS).

Please note that you can only make one application for vitamin D supplements, and you will need to apply before Sunday 21 February 2021.
